The research monograph is devoted to historical and urban planning studies of three Ukrainian cities of different administrative status, which belong to different historical regions and differ in the value of the immovable cultural heritage and the preservation of the traditional character of the environment. These are the regional center of Sumy, the rayon center of Poltava oblast Myrhorod, and the rayon center of Rivne oblast Korets. The research was carried out by the Research Institute of Monument Protection Research in 2011-2012, namely, for each city separately, research and project documentation was developed, including historical and architectural reference plans, determination of boundaries and modes of use of monument protection zones and historical areas of these cities. This research and design documentation became the basis for the development of master plans for these cities and an integral part of this urban planning documentation.
This monograph continues the series initiated in 2008 with the monographs Historical and Urban Studies of Chernivtsi and Historical and Urban Studies of Odesa and continued in 2011 with similar monographs on the cities of Kyiv, Kerch, Vasylkiv, Vinnytsia, Izmail, and Horlivka. The monograph continues to summarize the experience of the Research Institute of Monument Protection Studies in developing research and design documentation for various historic cities aimed at preserving the immovable cultural heritage. Therefore, the monograph can serve as a methodological guide for the development of such documentation for other historic cities.
The publication is intended for historians of architecture and urbanism, cultural studies, historians, archaeologists, local historians, art historians, museum workers, employees of cultural heritage protection bodies, urban planning and architecture bodies, local governments, students and teachers of educational institutions, activists of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, as well as anyone interested in the history and cultural heritage of Ukraine.
